Coiler is a rock band that hails from Olympia, WA.

Shortly after the turn of the century, Mike Rathke and David Thompson got together and
wrote a handful of songs on their acoustic guitars. They formed a little acoustic duo
and started playing gigs around town. Their fun and irreverent original songs drew a
dedicated group of fans to their performances, and Coiler became a hot commodity
around the South Sound area.

The handful of songs grew, and soon Coiler was playing the now-defunct Tequila Bar on
Olympia's westside weekly to a packed house. But Coiler yearned to make a bigger sound,
and dreamed of a mighty rhythm section to anchor those songs and propel them forward.
The dream was fulfilled by long-time friend Chad Maurer on bass, and new recruit Tim
Hurley on drums. Mike and Dave found some electric guitars to augment their acoustic
strummings, and their amps howled with delight. So did Coiler's fans.

Coiler is now a 21st century rock band whose sound is influenced by artists such as
Neil Young, Ween, the Butthole Surfers, King Crimson, the Dream Syndicate, Cream, and
many others. The songs are sometimes goofy, sometimes serious, and always delivered
with energy and enthusiasm. Coiler tunes range from psychedelic to socially
conscious to emotionally stunted butt-rock. Coiler loves live performance, and is
dedicated to bringing guitar-oriented rock music with sensitivity and humor to its
audience. Coiler will gladly play a three-hour show, but this is no Grateful Dead-style
jam band, filling time with aimless noodling. Coiler’s songs are tightly focused packages
of approachable rock and roll and catchy pop.
